Joint Base Langley-Eustis sits in a great location adjacent to Hampton and Newport News, Virginia. In 2010 12 joint bases were created including JBLE which merged Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis. The Army’s focus at Joint Base Langley-Eustis is transportation, aviation maintenance, and logistics. On the Air Force side the focus is the Global Cyberspace Integration Center and Air Combat Command.

The area around JBLE is rich with American history. The land surrounding the base used to called Mulberry Island and it was first settled by colonists in the early 1600's. Throughout American history the area has figured prominently in political and cultural events.

Arriving On Base

One of the benefits of traveling to Joint Base Langley-Eustis is the many different types of transportation that are readily accessible. Incoming service members can fly into Norfolk and then take a shuttle to the base. There is also train service through Amtrak, ferry service, and light rail and public transportation. Commuting to the area is fast and easy because public transportation runs around the clock and is inexpensive, safe, and fast.

Incoming soldiers who are reporting to Fort Eustis should immediately report to the Military Personnel Branch at 650 Monroe Ave. when they arrive. If you are arriving after regular duty hours contact your unit for instructions.

Incoming airmen who are reporting to Langley AFB during regular duty hours should contact their unit. Those who arrive after regular duty hours should report to 24-hour Base Lodging Office located at 44 Taylor Rd.

Both Gate 1 and the West Gate are open 24 hours. The other gates have posted hours but usually close before 11 PM. Joint Base Langley-Eustis participates in the Automated Installation Entry program so arriving military personnel and their families will need to go to the Visitor’s Center and register the IDs to get automated gate access.

Housing

Single service members will be lodged on post in dormitories for Air Force personal and in barracks for Army personnel. On post housing for families is managed by Fort Eustis Family Homes. The homes on base are updated and have modern floorplans. But many military families choose to live off base because there are many rental and buying options in the nearby communities. Some of the most popular areas for families to live off base include Newport News, Chesapeake, Franklin, and Poquoson.

Employment

Spouses should have no trouble finding exciting and fulfilling career opportunities in the area. With so many places that are just an easy commute by public transportation spouses who want to find high-level career opportunities can do so easily.

Activities

JB Langley-Eustis has no shortage of activities for the whole family. History buffs will love exploring all the significant historical sites and museums in the area. Easy access to beautiful countryside makes the area great for horseback riding, hiking, walking, biking, and outdoor sports. The hustle and bustle of one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country is just a quick train ride away as well.
