Camp Lejeune is located in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Camp Lejeune is surrounded by 14 miles of beaches, making the base ideal from training servicemen how to carry out amphibious assaults. This training facility is located between Wilmington deep-water port and Morehead city, another deep-water port. This location allows for the serviceman at Camp Lejeune to be deployed quickly. Camp Lejeune has serval satellite locations. Some of these satellite facilities include the Marine Corps Air Station New River, Camp Geiger, Stone Bay, Camp Johnson, and the Greater Sandy Run Training Area. Camp Lejeune has over 150,000 acres which support 32 gun positions, 48 tactical landing zones, three training facilities specializing in Military Operations in Urban Terrain and 80 live fire ranges. Camp Lejeune sees military personal from all over the globe for NATO-sponsored events.

History of Camp Lejeune

The construction of Camp Lejeune and its satellite bases began in 1941. Lieutenant colonel William P. T. Hill oversaw the construction of Camp Lejeune, which at the time was named New River. The base was renamed in 1942 in honor of the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, John A. Lejeune. In the early years of Camp Lejeune, the base was largely used for training serviceman.  From 1942 to 1949 the base had a segregated training program for African Americans. Camp Lejeune’s satellite location, Camp Johnson trained 20,000 African-American marines, until the military was ordered to fully integrate. Over the years, Camp Lejeune has continued to be used as a training facility, even training troops from all around the world.

Services

Camp Lejeune offers its servicemen and women a variety of service to make life at the base easier. Camp Lejeune has a Child and Youth Program which offers full-time and part time child care service for children who are between 6 weeks and 12 years old. The base also offers and Exceptional Family Member Program and a FOCUS family resiliency program. Both of these programs are designed to educate and aid families in creating a safe and happy home life, regardless of the families’ situation. For Servicemen and women on the base. Camp Lejeune offers a Marine Corps Family Team Building program and a Single Marine Program.

Schooling near Camp Lejeune

Camp Lejeune is surrounded by many school districts for families choose from. One of these school districts is the base’s own school system: Camp Lejeune/ New River Air Station Schools. This school system is only available to students who live on the base.  Other school systems include the Onslow County Schools, Pender County Schools, Carteret County Schools, Jones County Schools, and Duplin County Schools. Camp Lejeune and its satellites have several libraries available on base, some of which include the Harriotte B. Smith Library, Station Library, and Camp Johnson Library.

Recreation

Camp Lejeune has a variety of recreational opportunities. Some of which are the recreational and community centers that are located on the base. The base also has pools which can be used for recreation swimming, lap swimming, and  group and individual swimming lesson. The base also has Onslow Beach which is open to DOD ID card holders with proper base access.
